Matt Tifft Wins The 2012 Rookie Of The Year Honors

By Kari Shear-Carlson
October 8, 2012 – The ASA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings has crowned its 2012 Champion along with the 2012 Oktoberfest Champion. Jonathan Eilen won his first ever ASAMT Championship and Travis Sauter took home the victory.

“This is just awesome. I couldn’t do it without my team, my family, my wife and everybody,” said an emotional 2012 ASAMT Champion. “The biggest thing with this kind of stuff is to never give up. You just have to go out and do what you have to do, but never give up and that’s just what we did,” said Eilen.

After failing to make the race and getting in on a provisional, ECHO and ECHO Bear Cat Touring Star, Jonathan Eilen finished in the fifth spot. Going into the race, only thirteen points separated Eilen and Nathan Haseleu. Haseleu had a strong run, but finished eighth giving up those points to Eilen.

Travis Sauter started back in the eleventh position and methodically moved through the field. He took the lead away from pole-sitter, Chris Wimmer on lap 55 and never looked back despite a very hard-charging Skylar Holzhausen. Holzhausen just didn’t have enough to get it done. Sauter, Holzhausen and Fredrickson finished, one, two, three.

“It’s been a great year. I was not going to come here without winning. That was the goal the whole time,” said Sauter from victory lane. Sauter did just that when he became the 2012 Oktoberfest Champion.

The top three were pleased with the weekend although third place finisher, Dan Fredrickson was really hoping to win his fourth Oktoberfest event. “I’m really happy with it. Of course, I’d rather win, but these guys are really fast. Man, I love coming here!”

Chris Wimmer, who honored his late uncle Larry Detjens by carrying his old paint scheme and number, started on the pole with rookie, Cardell Potter on the outside. Wimmer took the lead as the field went to green and crossed the start finish line to complete the first lap.

But that first lap was as far as they got as a bunch of cars got together in turn three bringing out the red flag as the clean up began. Steve Carlson, Chris Weinkauf, ECHO Bear Cat Quick Cut Qualifier, Jeff Storm, Brandon Hill, Tim Rothe, Matt Kocourek and Thor Anderson were many of the names involved. Cardell Potter also had mechanical problems coming out of turn two causing him to give up his second spot and ending his day.

When the field went green Wimmer and Fredrickson chose the inside while Nick Murgic and Rookie of the Year, Matt Tifft tried the outside. Wimmer once again took the lead as Murgic was able to settle into second but not for long as Fredrickson soon moved past for the spot.

Nathan Haseleu started in the eighth spot as Eilen had to start back in 26th. Haseleu kept the points in check until Eilen started making his way through the field and eventually passed him and clinched the Championship.

The caution fell once again with 29 laps to go when Bobby Kendall had problems in turn four. As the cars lined-up for what would be the final restart, Sauter and Holzhausen chose the inside as Wimmer and Griffin McGrath, who sort of came out of nowhere, chose the outside.

The inside line was once again the fastest as Sauter and Holzhausen set the pace once again. Fredrickson had to work his way back up to third but was able to do it as the laps wound down.

“I really wanted to try the outside, but I also didn’t want to burn my stuff up and not have a chance to win,” said Holzhausen. “We are going to build off of this year and go for the win next year.”

Sauter took the trophy over Holzhausen and Fredrickson. McGrath and Eilen rounded out the top five.

Hinckley, Ohio’s, Matt Tifft who has been racing with the Iron Eagle Racing Team this year wrapped up the 2012 Rookie of the Year honors. “I just want to thank everybody. The series and all the sponsors. This is a really great series to race with and all the guys are just great to run with.”

The next event for the ASA Midwest Tour will be the 2012 Champions Banquet. More details will be available as it approaches.

By Kari Shear-Carlson
October 8, 2012 – James Swan swept the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Championship tonight in the 43rd Annual Oktoberfest in LaCrosse, WI. Swan won the 30 lap feature event in dominating fashion and wrapped up his first ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Championship as well as being crowned the Oktoberfest Champion.

“Oh I don’t know what to say about it. I have to thank all of my sponsors and QKA Racing. This is just amazing. These trucks are just awesome to drive,” said a very happy Swan from victory lane.

Jacob Van Wazer also took home the Rookie of the Year honors over Darrell Peterson with his ninth place finish. Winning the honor was overwhelming to the young driver. “It’s awesome to win this. It’s just awesome!”

Jerry Suderland started on the pole with Joe Rinnartz on the outside pole. Rinnartz took the early lead as the outside line led the way. Young driver, Natalie Decker moved into third as Andy Jones was charging through the field and battling for the third spot.

Dann Barber moved into fourth as Andy Jones dove to the inside of Decker for second setting his sights on Rinnartz for the lead. As Jones caught Rinnartz the rest of the field was closing in and a blanket could have been thrown over the top four.

In only her second Truck start, Natalie Decker took the lead on lap seven. James Swan was cruising his way through the field and found himself in second as Andy Jones made contact with the backstretch wall and Rinnartz spun in turn three in two separate incidents bringing out the caution.

At the restart, Swan started on the outside of Decker and they were side-by-side as they headed into turn four, but Swan took the lead as they crossed the line.

Meanwhile, Jerry Wood and Dann Barber were battling for third. Decker was continuing to charge for the lead with Swan but they made a little contact allowing Swan to get away. Barber and Jerry Wood also took advantage putting Decker into fourth.

Swan continued to stretch out his lead as Wood and Barber battled it out for second. Wood looked to the inside of Barber, but Barber shut the door. The top three pulled away from the rest of the field.

James Swan came home victorious. Barber held the position over Wood coming home in second and third. Natalie Decker came home a respectful fourth and John Wood rounded out the top five.

Schendel Heads Back To His Home Track For Oktoberfest Race Weekend

October 4, 2012

Sparta, WI (October 4, 2012) – Tim Schendel, super late-model and part-time NASCAR Nationwide driver, is headed back to his hometown track at the LaCrosse Speedway for the running of this weekend’s 43rd Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend. Always a favorite event for the Sparta, WI native, Schendel will race three days in two divisions, as well as mentor and coach ASA Midwest Tour’s Rookie of the Year contender, Matt Tifft.

Schendel will start the weekend off on Thursday night driving the #17 late model in the LaCrosse Late Model championship race for Durango Motorsports. On Friday, Schendel will be behind the wheel of his team’s super late model, the #21 Dean’s Satellite Chevrolet, racing in the Dick Trickle 99. He is also hoping to qualify and run in the season finale of the ASA Midwest Tour Championship race on Sunday.

“Oktoberfest is one of the best racing weekends – you can’t beat the atmosphere, camaraderie and competition.” Schendel said. “It’s a lot of fun. I love returning to the LaCrosse Speedway -it’s where I started and holds a lot of great memories. I would really like to put my name on the winner’s list once again!”

Schendel took home the Oktoberfest trophy twice in his career – in 2003 and 2005. In 2006, he catapulted to the champion of the NASCAR Series Elite Division-Midwest Series and went on to win the prestigious Toyota All-Star Showdown in Irwindale, CA. After that, Schendel was a regular touring star in the ASA Midwest Tour until 2011. This year, in addition to running select NASCAR Nationwide Series races for Jimmy Means Motorsports and TMG Motorsports, Schendel has spent most of his time in the garage building and maintaining super late models for his family-owned Iron Eagle Racing team as well as for Ohio native, 16-year-old Matt Tifft. He also serves as Tifft’s mentor and coach. Tifft is vying for the 2012 Rookie of the Year title and is currently leading the rookie points. He sits in fifth place in overall ASAMT points.

“I’ve had a busy season.” Schendel said. “I haven’t had a lot of seat time in the super lates but have spent a lot of time in the shop. The team is excited for Matt – he has led the rookie points for most of the season and if all goes well, should be named Rookie of the Year in the ASA Midwest Tour for 2012. As for me this weekend, I’m just looking forward to getting back into the #21 Dean’s Satellite Chevy and hopefully having a good run.”

After this weekend, Schendel is looking to run a few more NASCAR Nationwide Series races. Negotiations with teams are underway to determine his upcoming schedule.

“I’m grateful to the two teams that given me chances to drive in the NASCAR Nationwide Series this year.” Schendel said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to drive in the upper echelons of NASCAR but with sponsorship the way it is now, it’s hard to realize that dream. The teams I race with don’t have the best equipment and that’s been challenging at times but it is a lot of fun and hopefully, will lead to more opportunities for me.”

Dean’s Satellite, a Sparta, WI local business and dealer of DirectTV, DISH and home security systems, will be the primary sponsor on the #21 Chevrolet this weekend. Dean’s Satellite, recently named the #1 dealer in the nation for DirectTV, services homes and businesses in western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. Other Sparta, WI businesses – Marr Promotions, Club Oasis, Jon’s Rentals, Tim Neubauer Trucking, The Rite Spot, Shades Body Studio, S&S Distributing and Bud Light -are also helping the team out this weekend. Northside Mobile from Mauston, WI and Fastax from nearby Tomah, WI round out the list of sponsors.

Schedules for Oktoberfest Race Weekend can be found at www.oktoberfestraceweekend.com. Updates on Schendel can be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TimSchendel21. Four Drivers In The Hunt For The Truck Championship

October 3, 2012 – Lake Geneva, WI -After 8 races, the battle for the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Championship has come down to the very last event of the year with only 66 points separating the top four drivers. The 2012 champion will be crowned on Friday, October 5th at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI.

James Swan is leading the points heading into the finale with 2 wins to his credit. Swan, who has not finished outside of the top-5 this season, will bring his #97 Hankscraft Mfg, Gear Driven Performance, Spring Valley sponsored truck to LaCrosse in hopes of earning his first ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour championship.

“Luck, that’s how I ended up in the truck tour this year, but I’ve really enjoyed running with the trucks. I didn’t know anything about them at first, but it’s really taught me a lot that has helped me in other areas of racing too,” commented Swan. “I’m going to LaCrosse to have fun. The truck is good enough to win the championship and I’m ready.”

Chasing Swan are brothers John and Jerry Wood in second and third place respectively. John has two victories for the year in his #72 machine and is hot on Swan’s heels just 51 points behind. John Wood was runner up in the 2010 championship.

Two-time champion Jerry Wood enters LaCrosse 57 points out of first place. It was just a year ago in LaCrosse that he was crowned champion for the second time after winning the tie-breaker over Austin Luedtke.

The fourth driver in the hunt is Dann Barber. The driver of truck #3 finds himself 66 points behind the leader after visiting victory lane twice in his sophomore season. Barber finished 10th in the 2011 championship.

The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Champion will be crowned as part of the Octoberfest race weekend at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI on Friday October 5th. For more information visit www.asamidwesttour.com

Jerry Wood Does it Again at Elko Speedway

September 22, 2012

By Dean Reller
September 22, 2012 – Jerry Wood has done a lot of racing, but when the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour comes to Elko Speedway he takes things to another level. Wood fought off a late challenge by James Swan and Dan Barber to take home the win as a part of the Thunderstruck 93. “I had to drive a lot better against these guys just to beat them,” said Wood in Victory Lane. Wood has been the driver to beat as he has won the last three ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour races at Elko. “Elko fits me just fine, I love this place.”

Barber and Wood led the field to green and from the onslaught, it was a side by side battle. Barber and Wood quickly distanced themselves in the opening laps of the 39 lap event. The front pair staged a tight battle as Wood finally was able to find his way under Barber on lap 25.

Lapped traffic allowed Swan to catch the front pair, making it a three truck race for the top spot. Mark Rosenow and Joe Rinnartz made contact in turn three to bring out the yellow with 31 laps complete. On the restart, Barber grabbed the lead as it was game on with Wood again for the lead.

A couple of laps later, Wood again moved to the front, before John Wood and Chad Knaus tangled in turn two to bring out the final caution of the race with just four laps remaining. When the green waved the final time, Jerry Wood locked down the lead as Swan pressured Barber for second. Swan would finally take second with two laps to go as Wood flew to the win.

The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour wraps up its season on Friday October 5th at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisconsin. For more details visit asamidwesttour.com.

Haseleu Hopes for a Heavy Metal Finish in Thunderstruck 93 at Elko Speedway

September 20, 2012

by Dean Reller
September 20, 2012 – Nathan Haseleu could be considered the “Iron Man” of the ASA Midwest Tour Presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings. He’s started every race in the history of the series and when the green flag waves for the Thunderstruck 93 at Elko Speedway on Saturday Sept 22nd , Haseleu hopes to add not just another start, but another mark in the win column.

Haseleu, an ECHO and ECHO Bearcat Touring Star, sits fourth in points behind series leader Jonathan Eilen, Chris Wimmer and Chris Weinkauf. After a little over a month, the series returns to Elko where Haseleu finished second to Travis Sauter. “I’m really excited to go back to Elko”, said Haseleu. “We had a really good car last time and hopefully we can make it a little bit better and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Any trip to Elko means facing off against the Elko regulars who always seem to bring out their best to match up against the ASA Midwest Tour drivers. Included in the fold are former Thunderstruck 93 winners Jacob Goede and Dan Fredrickson. “They’re tough competitors and it’s always great to race against good competition,” said Haseleu.

Unlike the last race, the Thunderstruck 93 poses some new challenges and a slightly different game plan. “It’s a little bit different than the last race, it’s 25 laps shorter, with a break at lap 61 and then a 39 lap sprint to the finish”, said Haseleu. “If you have a good car you can go from the beginning. If you don’t, you can ride around and save your tires and then make changes at the break.”

Haseleu has been a fixture with the ASA Midwest Tour since its inception. He has never failed to make a feature in 70 races, was the inaugural Series Champion in 2007, has 5 career wins, won 7 ECHO Bear Cat Quick Cut Qualifier awards and has finished in the top 10 in 77% of the races. “It’s been fun going to all the races”, remarked Haseleu. “Our team has been lucky enough to have sponsors like RaceTeamGear.com that allows us to go to all these races over the past six years.”

Haseleu might be the “Iron Man” of the ASA Midwest Tour, but with an electric guitar for a trophy awaiting the winner of the Thunderstruck 93, whoever takes the checkered flag will be the rock star for the night.

The ASA Midwest Tour Late Models will be joined by the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour, Big 8 Late Model Series, Mid-American Stock Cars, and Thundercar Nationals.

The Thunderstruck 93 will be on Friday and Saturday September 21st and 22nd at Elko Speedway, located in Elko, Minnesota. Qualifying is scheduled for 5 PM, Friday, followed by qualifying races. Saturday will feature an ASA Midwest Tour driver autograph session at 5:30, followed by opening ceremonies at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will fly at 7 PM.
