Four Veterans Lead the 2017 ARCA Midwest Tour Touring Stars List

April 24, 2017

Long time race fans will easily recall the days when they would receive a bright colored flyer in the mail from the ARTGO Challenge Series announcing an upcoming event. Another item fans would recall seeing in the flyer was the “Stars & Cars” that appeared, an idea created by the late promoter John McKarns to help promote not only the event, but the top Midwest drivers that are guaranteed to be competing at that event.

Touring Stars Tune-up – Chris Weinkauf

by Jana Wimmer

Oct 1, 2014 – No word better describes Chris Weinkauf’s 2014 ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment season than ‘perseverance’. In the first five races of the year, Weinkauf never qualified outside of the top five, but only finished one race. Marred by mechanical problems and a few wrecks, the start of the season was frustrating with the most frustrating moment coming at the Milwaukee Mile, where Weinkauf led the first 90 laps before retiring early with another mechanical problem. “My wife Wendi looked me in the eyes after our heartbreak at Milwaukee,” said Chris Weinkauf, “We sobbed, we cried, we laughed and said this is what we do.”

Weinkauf persevered and as the Tour made its next stop at Grundy County Speedway, the bad luck seemed to wash away and Weinkauf found himself in Victory Lane for the first time in his ARCA Midwest Tour career. “We got a lot of support from a lot of people to keep the whole teams’ spirit alive,” said Weinkauf, “The win at Grundy was awesome and it meant a lot to know the whole team was there.”

From there Weinkauf’s season continued to turn around and in the next five races he never finished outside of the top ten. “We have been running better all year, we’ve just had some things start to go out way,” says Weinkauf, “It’s nice to see all the work we did over the winter finally show.”

Weinkauf enters the final race of the 2014 season fourth in Midwest Tour points and just three points behind Jonathan Eilen in third, but that’s not something that’s on his mind. “We have always gone to the track to win,” said Weinkauf, “So this weekend is no different than any other.”

This weekend marks the 21st time Weinkauf has raced Oktoberfest, and the change to a 200-lap main event with pit stops is something he looks forward to. “I am excited for the race on Sunday and I give everyone involved an ‘A’ for effort to make the race more exciting for the fans,” said Weinkauf, “The Tour had the same style pit stops at Milwaukee this year and I thought it was great. We are going to see how it unfolds just like we did at Milwaukee.”

Weinkauf does hope, however, the outcome of the Oktoberfest 200 is better for him than that of the Howie Lettow Memorial at The Milwaukee Mile back in June.

CHRIS WEINKAUF LOOKING FORWARD TO A FRESH START AT STATE PARK SPEEDWAY

ARCA Midwest Tour Heads to Wausau, WI on Saturday, May 17th

by Kari Shear-Carlson
May 9, 2014 – “Well, we’ve kind of had a rough start.” Rough start is an understatement for Chris Weinkauf, who has been unable to finish either of the first two ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment events, simply from being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

It isn’t for lack of speed that the Jay VanDerGeest Cattle, Professional Drywall, and Breber Music sponsored team has not yet crossed the finish line. In fact, last weekend at Madison International Speedway, Weinkauf was one of the fastest cars, topping the charts in practice both Saturday and Sunday.

While many teams would feel frustrated and a little defeated, the ARCA Midwest Touring Star and his entire team are actually excited…that’s right, excited. One of the reasons that the team is able to keep their heads up and look ahead is because of their car owner, Jay VanDerGeest.

“I think Jay is more excited than we are,” joked Weinkauf. “We ran decent at Toledo and were really good at MIS and he (Jay) is able to see the momentum in that and just wants us to go out there and build on it. So we are really looking forward to Wausau.”

Chris cannot say enough about the support Jay gives him and the entire operation. “He’s very generous, he does so much for us. He tries to do everything he can to help us get that win. We think we may have found something over the winter for these smaller tracks, so hopefully we can get it in the right place at the right time,” said Chris.

The Merrill, WI driver considers Wausau to be his home track. He has several track championships and would love to get an ARCA Midwest Tour win in front of his family and friends. “It’s been eluding me long enough,” laughed Chris.

When asked what the best part about winning would be, without hesitation, Chris said, “if I could applaud the fans after I win one of these races, that would mean more to me than anything.”

Make plans to be one of those fans next Saturday, May 17th, when the ARCA Midwest Tour heads to State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI. A complete schedule of the day’s events can be found at arcamidwesttour.com.

by Kari Shear-Carlson

Mar 10, 2014 – The 2014 Touring Stars, a combination of veterans and new faces, will lead the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment into a full season of short track racing throughout the Midwest.

To qualify for this elite program, competitors must adhere to strict guidelines that ensure the highest quality of driver talent and the strongest level of competition among the Touring Stars. Touring Star positions were selected this year based on a variety of different requirements ranging from; overall past and current racing success, series success and racing stats, years of racing with the Tour and prior Touring Star status. Consideration is also given to how the driver represents himself, his sponsors and the series.

“The Touring Star program is something the series has taken great pride in since day one. These are the cars and stars of the Midwest Tour and this allows us to build that excitement for fans that attend their local race track and look forward to seeing their own hero’s, “their local stars,” battle against the travelers at each event. That’s what short track racing is all about and we are proud to bring the best of the best to tracks around the Midwest,” said Steve Einhaus, VP.

Each of the drivers below has met the criteria and will represent the ARCA Midwest Tour in 2014.

In order to better reward participating drivers, the criteria that drivers will have to meet to be eligible for the event bonuses has been refined and the standards have been raised.  Touring Star’s attendance throughout all 2014 events is mandatory unless excused by the series president and vice president. Drivers that miss an event will no longer be allowed to continue in the program during the same calendar year.

As a reward for their loyalty to the Midwest Tour, Touring Star drivers will be provided several bonuses throughout the race season. Touring Star drivers will be awarded one additional provisional during the season above and beyond the current two that are allowed.

A bonus payout system has been created. It is based off of the number of cars that enter each race; the more cars that enter the event, the higher the bonus pay out will be, with max payout being at 32 cars. Touring Stars are guaranteed a $200 bonus at each event but can win up to $1000 at each event.  All bonuses will be paid out at the following event. Eligible Rookie of the Year contenders who have filed all paperwork properly and are evaluated will qualify for the bonus program along with the Touring Stars.

Any positions that become vacant during the year will be filled based on series points. An open 15th position will be available for additional Rookies or future Touring Stars that fall into the position based on their attendance and series points position if no remaining rookies are on the tour.

Weinkauf’s Battle Each Other As Well As The Rest Of The ARCA Midwest Tour

Part 2of 2: Jason Tells His Side Of The Story

by Gregg Paul
The ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings brings you part two of a story on how the Weinkauf brothers handle the pressures and challenges of racing together. Team DOC 360 Touring Star Jason Weinkauf tells his side of the story.

Jason Weinkauf is no stranger to winning at Marshfield Motor Speedway. Jason has multiple feature wins and consecutive track championships in 2009 and 2010 to go along with his first career win in the ARCA Midwest Tour in 2011. He is anxious to return to see if he can recapture the glory of past successes.

“We have had a lot of success running weekly at MMS in the past, winning the track championship in 2009 and 2010, and coming real close to three-peating, finishing second in 2011,” said Jason. “Which was probably the most impressive as we skipped two nights earlier in that season and then went on to win multiple feature wins as well as set fast time in every single appearance we were in that season. But we know what we’re up against in the ARCA Midwest Tour series, running against the best drivers in the upper Midwest and even though we consider MMS our “home track” because of our past weekly success, that can only take us so far. We have to be at our very best in order to compete for the win. Despite this tough task ahead of us, we do really look forward to the series returning to MMS because we have had some series success there in the past in capturing our first ever Midwest Tour victory in 2011. We lost a motor in our primary 76 car a few weeks before that and having to jump into the “bosses” 23 car (as we like to refer to our car owner Jay VanDerGeest). That win was definitely the highlight of my career, so far.”

Just like his brother Chris, Jason looks at their racing relationship a bit differently than their family relationship. The typical sibling rivalry has been geared towards being on the professional side as opposed to the childish side.

“Racing against Chris has always been fun,” said Jason. “We’re brothers, but when we’re on the track we’re both super competitive and we both want to beat each other. We pretty much treat each other as “just another racer” out there in the event, but still help each other out the best that we can in the pits, as well as in the shop. We haven’t had a ton of 1 – 2 finishes in our careers (we’d definitely love to see more, especially in the tour), but I think I have the edge, when it comes out to who was on the top of most of those battles. That’s probably not what others would have imagined, as overall Chris has had a more consistent career of running up front.”

Jason certainly appreciates the help and stability that a good sponsor and race team can bring. The VanDerGeest’s have helped both Jason and Chris remain competitive and always a threat to win, especially at their “home track” at MMS.

“We used to be a self funded race team, but now we’re in our third year together with VanDerGeest racing,” said Jason. “That also consists of Jay, who races himself weekly at State Park Speedway. Our car owners, the VanDerGeest’s, Jay, Kristen and Levon have been great. We wouldn’t be running the Tour if it wasn’t for them providing us with all the tools and resources we need to do what we love to do. Many people don’t realize that they just love racing and love helping people out. Whether it’s putting on food at their motor home at the tracks for other racers and even the series workers, to constantly calling up the series directors with ideas to make the Tour better. Overall we’ve had our ups and downs the last two and a half seasons, but I think it’s only made us stronger and I believe there are good things to come for us the rest of this season.”

Those good things just might come to them beginning at Marshfield Motor Speedway on June 29th.
