Matt Tifft Wins The 2012 Rookie Of The Year Honors

By Kari Shear-Carlson
October 8, 2012 – The ASA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings has crowned its 2012 Champion along with the 2012 Oktoberfest Champion. Jonathan Eilen won his first ever ASAMT Championship and Travis Sauter took home the victory.

“This is just awesome. I couldn’t do it without my team, my family, my wife and everybody,” said an emotional 2012 ASAMT Champion. “The biggest thing with this kind of stuff is to never give up. You just have to go out and do what you have to do, but never give up and that’s just what we did,” said Eilen.

After failing to make the race and getting in on a provisional, ECHO and ECHO Bear Cat Touring Star, Jonathan Eilen finished in the fifth spot. Going into the race, only thirteen points separated Eilen and Nathan Haseleu. Haseleu had a strong run, but finished eighth giving up those points to Eilen.

Travis Sauter started back in the eleventh position and methodically moved through the field. He took the lead away from pole-sitter, Chris Wimmer on lap 55 and never looked back despite a very hard-charging Skylar Holzhausen. Holzhausen just didn’t have enough to get it done. Sauter, Holzhausen and Fredrickson finished, one, two, three.

“It’s been a great year. I was not going to come here without winning. That was the goal the whole time,” said Sauter from victory lane. Sauter did just that when he became the 2012 Oktoberfest Champion.

The top three were pleased with the weekend although third place finisher, Dan Fredrickson was really hoping to win his fourth Oktoberfest event. “I’m really happy with it. Of course, I’d rather win, but these guys are really fast. Man, I love coming here!”

Chris Wimmer, who honored his late uncle Larry Detjens by carrying his old paint scheme and number, started on the pole with rookie, Cardell Potter on the outside. Wimmer took the lead as the field went to green and crossed the start finish line to complete the first lap.

But that first lap was as far as they got as a bunch of cars got together in turn three bringing out the red flag as the clean up began. Steve Carlson, Chris Weinkauf, ECHO Bear Cat Quick Cut Qualifier, Jeff Storm, Brandon Hill, Tim Rothe, Matt Kocourek and Thor Anderson were many of the names involved. Cardell Potter also had mechanical problems coming out of turn two causing him to give up his second spot and ending his day.

When the field went green Wimmer and Fredrickson chose the inside while Nick Murgic and Rookie of the Year, Matt Tifft tried the outside. Wimmer once again took the lead as Murgic was able to settle into second but not for long as Fredrickson soon moved past for the spot.

Nathan Haseleu started in the eighth spot as Eilen had to start back in 26th. Haseleu kept the points in check until Eilen started making his way through the field and eventually passed him and clinched the Championship.

The caution fell once again with 29 laps to go when Bobby Kendall had problems in turn four. As the cars lined-up for what would be the final restart, Sauter and Holzhausen chose the inside as Wimmer and Griffin McGrath, who sort of came out of nowhere, chose the outside.

The inside line was once again the fastest as Sauter and Holzhausen set the pace once again. Fredrickson had to work his way back up to third but was able to do it as the laps wound down.

“I really wanted to try the outside, but I also didn’t want to burn my stuff up and not have a chance to win,” said Holzhausen. “We are going to build off of this year and go for the win next year.”

Sauter took the trophy over Holzhausen and Fredrickson. McGrath and Eilen rounded out the top five.

Hinckley, Ohio’s, Matt Tifft who has been racing with the Iron Eagle Racing Team this year wrapped up the 2012 Rookie of the Year honors. “I just want to thank everybody. The series and all the sponsors. This is a really great series to race with and all the guys are just great to run with.”

The next event for the ASA Midwest Tour will be the 2012 Champions Banquet. More details will be available as it approaches.

Feature Results | Final Points

By Kari Shear-Carlson
October 8, 2012 – James Swan swept the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Championship tonight in the 43rd Annual Oktoberfest in LaCrosse, WI. Swan won the 30 lap feature event in dominating fashion and wrapped up his first ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Championship as well as being crowned the Oktoberfest Champion.

“Oh I don’t know what to say about it. I have to thank all of my sponsors and QKA Racing. This is just amazing. These trucks are just awesome to drive,” said a very happy Swan from victory lane.

Jacob Van Wazer also took home the Rookie of the Year honors over Darrell Peterson with his ninth place finish. Winning the honor was overwhelming to the young driver. “It’s awesome to win this. It’s just awesome!”

Jerry Suderland started on the pole with Joe Rinnartz on the outside pole. Rinnartz took the early lead as the outside line led the way. Young driver, Natalie Decker moved into third as Andy Jones was charging through the field and battling for the third spot.

Dann Barber moved into fourth as Andy Jones dove to the inside of Decker for second setting his sights on Rinnartz for the lead. As Jones caught Rinnartz the rest of the field was closing in and a blanket could have been thrown over the top four.

In only her second Truck start, Natalie Decker took the lead on lap seven. James Swan was cruising his way through the field and found himself in second as Andy Jones made contact with the backstretch wall and Rinnartz spun in turn three in two separate incidents bringing out the caution.

At the restart, Swan started on the outside of Decker and they were side-by-side as they headed into turn four, but Swan took the lead as they crossed the line.

Meanwhile, Jerry Wood and Dann Barber were battling for third. Decker was continuing to charge for the lead with Swan but they made a little contact allowing Swan to get away. Barber and Jerry Wood also took advantage putting Decker into fourth.

Swan continued to stretch out his lead as Wood and Barber battled it out for second. Wood looked to the inside of Barber, but Barber shut the door. The top three pulled away from the rest of the field.

James Swan came home victorious. Barber held the position over Wood coming home in second and third. Natalie Decker came home a respectful fourth and John Wood rounded out the top five.

Swan Holds Off Barber in ASA Midwest Scag Truck Series at Marshfield Motor Speedway

August 18, 2012

Marshfield, WI, August 18th, 2012 – Visiting Marshfield Motor Speedway for a second time in 2012 was the SCAG ASA Midwest Tour Trucks. James Swan started the night off like he finished a week ago in Norway, Michigan. Swan set fast time with a lap time of 18.745, with Dan Barber qualifying second and Jerry Wood, third.

Leading the field to the green flag in the ASA SCAG Midwest Truck Tour feature event at Marshfield was Roger Eagan and Joe Rinartz. Jacob Louis VanWazer, the first heat winner, quickly moved to the front in the Marshfield 40 with outside passes of Eagan and Rinartz. VanWazer held the lead until Steve Schultz and he got together bringing out the only caution in the race. On the restart, it was point leader Swan moving to the front. Swan built a 5 truck lead over Andy Jirik by lap ten. Jirik would hold down the second position until lap 31. That was when a very fast Dan Barber worked his way through the field of cars and ran down Jirik for the runner up position. Barber, looked to possibly have the fastest truck the last ten laps of the race. Barber cut the lead that Swan had built for himself down to three truck lengths. Another driver working his way through the field was that of John Wood. Wood, who earlier in the evening drove his truck to a fast heat win, worked his way to the fourth position and was looking to get by Andy Jirik for the third position. However, once starter Geno Eckes through the checkered flag in the Marshfield 40, it was all James Swan! Swan held off a hard charging Dan Barber by 4 truck lengths for the win. Andy Jirik was able to fend off challenges from John Wood for the podium finish. Joe Rinartz had a very consistant run coming home in the fifth position.

John Wood Powers His Way to Victory Lane at MIS

June 29, 2012

John Wood took the lead on lap 15 and never looked back as he held off a field of eighteen ASA Trucks to win the 40 lap feature on Salute to America Night at Madison International Speedway.

Bill Collins and Camden Murphy brought the eighteen truck field to the green flag for their 40 lap feature event. Murphy pulled ahead for the lead at the start followed by Collins and Vince Wilkinson, but the caution came out on lap 2 when the truck of Jacob Van Wazer hit the wall coming out of turn four.

Murphy retained his lead after the green waved again with Collins and Wilkinson still chasing him. John Wood and Chad Wood were up to fourth and fifth on lap 4 with John Wood getting by Wilkinson for third on lap 5 while Murphy coasting out front.

On lap 7 John Wood moved past Collins for second with the hard charging Chad Knaus going by Collins one lap later. Murphy, Wood, and Knaus built up a large lead over the field with Wood working his way to the inside of Murphy on lap 14 to take the lead one lap later.

Knaus was able to take the second spot on lap 18 after moving his way to the inside of Murphy. On lap 21 Knaus was up to challenge Wood for the lead and the duo were set to do battle.

Wood gradually increased his lead to five truck lengths as he and Knaus worked their way through lapped traffic. Murphy remained a distant third followed by James Swan and Jeff Watters.

By lap 33 Wood’s lead had increased to ten lengths and it appeared that the only thing that would stop the local favorite would be a caution flag which never happened as Wood cruised to victory lane beating Knaus by 1.055 seconds. The best race on the track was for third between Murphy and Swan who raced the final two laps side by side with Murphy getting the nod at the stripe
In the first heat, Steve Schulz took the early lead but charging through the field was Dann Barber who pulled to the outside Schulz on lap four and the two raced side by side. On lap 5 Barber cleared Schulz to take the lead while Jerry Wood was up to battle Schulz for second. Barber led the rest of the way to pick up the win with Wood edging Schulz for the runner-up position.

Camden Murphy took the lead from the start in the second heat race and put some major real estate between himself and the second place truck of Bill Collins. On lap 5 Chad Wood and John Wood both passed up Collins for second and third place. But eight laps would not be enough to catch the leader as Murphy easily picked up the win.

Watters set fast time with a lap of 18.791 followed by Chad Wood (18.862), Swan (18.868), John Wood (18.990) and Knaus (19.000). Rounding out the top ten in qualifying were Wilkinson, Becker, Murphy, Collins, and Corso.

Bob Heine won the 10 lap feature for the Midwest Vintage cars. Jim Heiland started on the pole with Heine on the outside. Heine grabbed the lead on the first lap with Gary Mitidiero quickly up to second place. Mitidiero tried everything he could to cut the gap between himself and the leader but Heine proved to be too strong and led all the way to victory lane. Jerry Schneider finished in third place with Heiland in fourth.

Racing at MIS continues next Friday night with Round Two of the Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge and the Johnny Ziegler Tribute. See the super late models in 93 laps of feature racing (50 + 43) plus the Ho Chunk Gaming Madison Sportsman and Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends. Pit gates open at 3:30, practice at 4:45, qualifying at 6:15 with racing to follow. For more information about racing at MIS please checkout our website at madisoninternationalspeedway.com.

ASA Midwest Truck Tour Making First 2012 Trip to MIS this Friday Night

June 24, 2012

By Kari Shear-Carlson
June 24, 2012 – The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour heads to Madison International Speedway this Friday, June 29th for its third event of the 2012 season.

There have only been two events so far this season after Marshfield Motor Speedway was rained out on Saturday, June 16th. This has kept the points battle very tight. Only seven points separate the top five. The current point leader is James Swan with 312 points. Dan Barber is second only two points behind Swan (310) followed by Chad Knaus with 309. Brothers Jerry and John Wood are tied for fourth with 305 points.

This Friday night the Trucks will head to Madison International Speedway for their third event. In 2011 they made three trips to the the track with three different winners. Bobby Wilberg, Austin Luedtke, and Dan Lensing each made it to victory lane in 2011, none of which have yet competed in 2012.

Will James Swan be able to hold on to his point lead and get his first ever Truck win, or will one of the veteran Wood brothers defend their home turf and get a first win of the season?

Head on out to Madison International Speedway this Friday night, June 29th. Qualifying starts at 6:00PM followed by Madison’s regular night of weekly racing.

June 14, 2012

June 14, 2012 – Well the ASA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings was not the only thing racing this past Tuesday at the Milwaukee Mile. The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour had their own 30 lap feature event as well.

Twenty-one trucks qualified and made the event. The #97 of James Swan had the fastest lap with a 30.936 ahead of the 88 of Rick Corso with a 31.365 and #72 of John Wood with a 31.502.

An invert of 13, put Sandwich, IL driver, Vinnie Wilkinson on the inside of the front row. Bill Collins started in second followed by Joel Willman and eventual winner, Dan Barber.

As the green flag dropped, Bill Collins took off with the early lead. The battle was mid-pack as the trucks battled side-by-side lap after lap.

The two trucks that were on the early move were Dan Barber and Jerry Wood. On lap ten Sun Prairie’s Chad Knaus slipped into the lead as Dan Barber dove to the inside of Bill Collins for second.

Meanwhile the #72 of John Wood was on a mission and setting his sights on the top three after starting in 11th.

About mid-race the field began to stretch out and drivers were settling in. But up front, Dan Barber and Chad Knaus were nose to tail.

Barber started to stretch out his lead as John Wood started his battle with Jeff Watters for third. He could not get it done until a lap later when he got around Watters and went up to third.

Dan Barber won the Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 30 followed by Chad Knaus and John Wood. Jeff Watters and James Swan rounded out the top five.

ASA Midwest Tour and SCAG Truck Tour World Wide Packaging State Park 125 Race Day Recap

May 22, 2012

By Kari Shear-Carlson
May 22, 2012 – Dan Fredrickson and Jerry Wood were victorious in the American Speed Association® Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings and the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour events at State Park Speedway on Saturday night, May 19th.

DAN FREDRICKSON WINS HIS DEBUT AT SPS

The 2008 ASAMT Champion, Dan Fredrickson in his Mid-State Reclamation & Trucking; B&B; Brothers Jorgenson sponsored car made his first ever trip to State Park Speedway on Saturday and adapted to the very competitive quarter mile as if he raced there weekly. Dan started in the sixth position after qualifying fifth. It did not take him long to make his way to the front.

He proved that two-groove racing is alive and well at SPS when he chose the outside at the restart after a competition yellow. Fredrickson was able to maintain his lead, albeit with a very hungry Jonathan Eilen never losing site of Fredrickson’s bumper until the checkered flag fell.

Last year’s winner and local hero, Mark Mackesy came on strong at the end and got another podium finish rounding out the top three.

JERRY WOOD WINS THE ASA MIDWEST SCAG TRUCK TOUR SEASON OPENER

Jerry Wood led James Swan and Chad Knaus of Sun Prairie, WI across the finish line in the Truck Tour’s first event of the 2012 season. Wood is the 2010 and 2011 ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour Champion and he continued right where he left off on Saturday night. Fourteen trucks took the green flag. Jerry took the early lead and while Swan closed in on him a bit, it just was not enough to get the job done. There were some great battles throughout the field during the 50 lap event indicating that it is going to be a great season of great racing in 2012.

ROOKIE MATT TIFFT GETS FIRST ASAMT POLE OF THE SEASON
Youngster, Matt Tifft from Hinckley, OH, powered his way to the top of the charts in qualifying, putting his #89 Malco Products, Judge, Lauric & Pahoresky, CPA Ford in the top spot turning a 13.467. Tifft started the event in 14th position and hung on in one of the most jam-packed, side-by-side events ever seen for an 18th place finish.

DAN BARBER OPENS UP THE ASA MIDWEST SCAG TRUCK TOUR WITH THE POLE
The #3 of Dan Barber opened the Truck Tour season by taking the pole with a 13.932. John Wood was second with a 14.093 only one-one thousand of a second ahead of Bill Collins who had a 14.094.

ECHO AND ECHO BEAR CAT TOURING STARS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE FIELD
Jonathan Eilen led the way for the 2012 ECHO and ECHO Bear Cat Touring Stars on Saturday night. After coming out of nowhere in the season opener at MIS, Eilen continued to show that he is in it to win it in 2012. Eilen started 11th and made his way to the front, maneuvering through lapped traffic in professional style. He and Fredrickson put on a fantastic finish to a great night of racing.

Another Touring Star who is off to a great start is Nick Panitzke. After running up front and leading for a while, Panitzke unfortunately encountered some problems and dropped back later in the race. Jacob Goede, Nathan Haseleu, Skylar Holzhausen, Chris Weinkauf and Chris Wimmer were all in the top ten. Last week’s winner, Andrew Morrissey finished 13th.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CONTENDERS CONTINUE TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE
Six Rookie of the Year drivers competed in the feature event on Saturday night. Once again, Jason Weinkauf sponsored by Professional Drywall, Jay VanDerGeest Cattle and Hartleban Farms, led the way for the rookies. Weinkauf ran up front most of the night finishing in ninth.

Young Ty Majeski, who won the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour event at SPS in 2011, finished in 11th. Fast qualifier, Matt Tifft finished in 18th, followed by Cardell Potter in 20th, Austin Luedtke in 21st and Jeff Holtz in 27th.
HASELEU AND SWAN TAKE HOME BIG DOG BONUS

The Big Dog Bonus lap sponsorship program continued to grow for the ASAMT and was already up to $1300 for the ASA Midwest Tour. RaceTeamGear.com and Swiss Colony sponsored, Nathan Haseleu was the Big Dog for the ASAMT.
Finishing in the top 10 awarded Haseleu a little extra cash for the night. Because he was not a part of the program at MIS, he took home only $600 and the remaining $700 will carry over to Berlin Raceway on June 2nd.

The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour started it’s season off with $500 in the pot. James Swan got the luck of the draw for the Trucks. Swan finished second in his race and took home the full $500 for the Trucks. They will start a new pot at Milwaukee on June 12th.
